How to get IPv6

A very short guide on how to get IPv6

Posted on Feb. 5, 2019

You are looking for IPv6 connectivity? That is great! Let us show you some ways, how to get IPv6 and what the advantages and disadvantages of each method are.

Ask your provider

The first and foremost approach should be to contact your ISP. Maybe your ISP already offers IPv6 and just needs to enable it for your connection. If they don't support IPv6 yet, this might however take some time.

  • Advantages
    • Usually no additional costs
    • Helps others of the same ISP also to get IPv6
    • Lowest latency variant
  • Disadvantages
    • Can take a long time, if the ISP did not yet implement IPv6

Use a free IPv6 tunnel service

The only free remaining tunnel service is to our knowledge HE.net. You can get a /48 for free from them. However this only works if you are not behind CGNAT.

  • Advantages
    • No additional costs
  • Disadvantages
    • Does not work in CGNAT scenarios
    • Hard to use on mobile networks (because of CGNAT)
    • Higher than native IPv6 latency

We were also notified about tb.netassist.ua, however we did not yet test it - any feedback if you are a user is welcome!

Use a paid IPv6 tunnel service

Paid tunnels usually work using some kind of VPN technology and work even in harsh network environments (mobile network, high latency, CGNAT).

  • Advantages
    • Works almost anywhere [tm]
    • Usually encrypts the traffic until the end point
    • Potentially allows you to originate traffic in a different country
    • Easy to use on mobile networks
  • Disadvantages
    • Additional costs
    • Higher than native IPv6 latency

Teredo/Miredo

There is also the possibility of using Teredo/Miredo that works "almost anywhere".

  • Advantages
    • Works almost anywhere [tm]
    • Uses smart detection for finding its IPv6 address
  • Disadvantages
    • Only 1 IPv6 address
    • IPv6 address depends on the IPv4 address
    • Some networks block teredo traffic (because it used to be automatically enabled on Windows)
